At the University of Reading in England a test was held to see if a computer could hold a conversation with a human and they wouldn't know the difference. They way the test was held was they had testers sit at a computer and have a conversation with two people. One being a real human and one being a computer. They were then asked at the end of the conversation who they believed to be the human and the robot. On some occasions the testers were stumped and got it wrong. With the technology the way it is right now it seems like there are many years until it becomes actually useful but the fact that a computer can use sarcasm and joke around is still amazing. But as time progresses and the technology gets more sophisticated I believe that this is a great breakthrough in technology but I believe that having this sort of technology could have its ups and downs. The good part involving this study is that the artificial intelligence could allow for computers and robots to complete tasks that put humans at risk or could help eliminate human error. Examples of this would be mining in caves. They wouldn't have to worry about anymore mining accidents if it was robots down there or during surgery a robot could perform it instead of a human. But the problem with this would be that it would eliminate more jobs for people. An example of this already occurring is just on assembly lines. People used to have jobs on assembly lines and now robots mostly take care of all the assembly necessary. Another possibility of this posing a problem is the sci-fi idea of robots and computers gaining too much intelligence and beginning to become dangerous to humans because they help run most of the military equipment and also they have control over most of the economic aspects of companies and personal accounts.
In the end I don't believe that this technology is a bad thing in the least. The greater the technology the better. I just feel that we should invest technology money into something more important than a computer that can hold a conversation. This is a great accomplishment though and I believe that my generation won't be able to see the true affects that this one little step in artificial intelligence will be able to help produce. I just hope that the creators of the future technology involving artificial intelligence take the right precautions in keeping the technology under control.

We have come so far as a society in creating new technologies that make our everyday lives easier and more hassle free. Upon reading this blog I find myself questioning the need for a computer that can have a conversation. I think that it is amazing that there are people who know how to create such a unique application for a computer our society is becoming too informal. Just think about how easy it is to simply text someone instead of calling them, e-mailing instead of sitting down and actually writing a letter. Now of course I use all of these conveniences but in today's society we are almost forced to. At the rate these things are going people will not even need to go into work anymore with the technologies of the web cam and "digital conferences". It is also sad that we live in a world where computers will be smarter than us and indefinitely smarter than future generations. We need to be spending more money on scholarships and making sure that everyone can afford to go to college than creating a computer that can do the thinking for us.
I also feel that the need for a computer having a conversation is unnecessary. Although it is great that we have made so many advances in techonology but I think there has to be a point where we have to stop. I don't think we should have so many goals to take jobs from people and give them to computers. For our economy to run, we need to keep people employed and I don't feel that replacing people with computers is the right answer for our economic problems these days. However, I do think that they should be used for certain instances as the writer mentioned like certain mining jobs. Personally, I would rather have a human operating on me and not a computer because despite how precise they may be, there is always a risk that it can malfunction. I thin it is scary to think that computers may be gaining too much control in our society and think it is important to note the importance of humans in businesses. Though this seems ground breaking, I am not too excited to see how far it goes.
